This document contains the list of proposed entities and activities for consideration in the Model Serve Elements project.
Entities are simple items that can be defined. E.g.,
- Source language. The language from which text is translated. Generally the language in which text is originally authored.
- Target language. The language into which text is translated.
Activities are more complex items that require more detail and encapsulate a process. E.g.,
- translation
- localization
- engineering
All inputs and outputs for Activities must be defined Entities.?
In general, tasks should be treated as Activities and their inputs and outputs as Entities.
Activities are fundamentally more complex than Entities and cannot be easily maintained in a terminology management system. Activities will be defined in terms of the following:
- Required inputs. Those items required by an Activity. E.g., a source text is required for translation.
- Optional inputs. Those items that may be required or used by an Activity. E.g., a translation memory may be used for translation.
- Required outputs. Those items that must be produced by an Activity. E.g., translation must produce a target text.
- Optional outputs. Those items that may be produced by an Activity. E.g., translation may produce a translation memory.
- Required sub-activities. Those Activities that are required as part of a higher-level Activity. E.g., translation is a required Activity in localization.
- Optional sub-activities. Those Activities that may be required as part of a higher-level Activity. E.g.,localization may include editing or DTP.
- Pricing basis: The basis for pricing of the Activity (e.g, per-word, per-hour, per-item).
Any of the optional items should include a description of their likely applicability (i.e., when is it likely that they will be used?)
